As a testament to SISFU’s continuing commitment to women empowerment and gender equality, Dr. Jocelyn Tizon, President of SISFU and SGEN, served as the featured speaker during De Montfort University’s annual celebration of International Women’s Day.

Her inspiring talk, “Give to Gain,” emphasized the value of providing women with equal opportunities and the long-term benefits that follow. “When we give opportunity, we don’t lose anything. We gain stronger leaders, more innovative organisations, and a more resilient nation,” Dr. Tizon shared, underscoring how empowering women leads to stronger leadership and societal growth.

Dr. Tizon highlighted that while the Philippines stands as one of the global examples of female equality, much work remains to achieve true gender and equality in access to resources. Despite Filipino women excelling in education and the workplace, only around 17% hold land ownership in the country—a notable indicator of the remaining gap in participation and ownership. “Empowerment is real only when education and participation open doors to ownership and leadership,” she added.

She also stressed the importance of visibility and how SISFU actively fosters ladies empowerment at the institutional level. Women leaders within the school are not only part of discussions but also play influential roles in shaping decisions and driving progress toward equality.

Beyond internal initiatives, Dr. Tizon called for a collective effort to empower women, empower women—a belief grounded in unity and collaboration. She revealed that SISFU is in the process of applying for a position under the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles (UN WEPs), led by Dr. Genevieve Ledesma-Laurel. This strategic move aims to align SISFU’s programmes with global standards that promote women’s empowerment and amplify institutional impact beyond the school community.

In closing, Dr. Tizon left a powerful message: “When women rise, communities rise. When communities rise, nations move forward.” Her words captured the essence of gender equality and leadership—a reminder that empowering women strengthens families, organisations, and nations.

Through its advocacy and actions, SISFU continues to stand as a leader in women’s empowerment—empowering the next generation of women to lead, innovate, and inspire.
