In celebration of International Women’s Month, Southville International School Affiliated with Foreign Universities proudly honors one of the most influential women in Philippine education—Dr. Genevieve Ledesma-Laurel. A visionary leader, educator, and trailblazer, she has transformed the landscape of learning in the country and pioneered what is now known as transnational education in the Philippines.
Dr.Gene’s journey began with a deeply personal mission, to provide world-class education for her children. In 1990, she founded Southville International School and Colleges, starting with only a handful of students but guided by a powerful vision: to develop globally competitive, values-driven individuals. What started as a small school soon grew into a leading international institution. Driven by her commitment to innovation, Dr. Ledesma-Laurel recognized early on that education must evolve beyond borders. This vision led to the establishment of Southville International School affiliated with Foreign Universities in 1998—the first transnational university in the Philippines. Through SISFU, Dr. Ledesma-Laurel introduced a revolutionary approach: bringing internationally recognized degrees, global faculty, and industry-relevant education directly to Filipino students. At a time when studying abroad was the only pathway to global credentials, she made it accessible locally—bridging the gap between the Philippines and the world. (Southville International School)
Her leadership did not only redefine institutions—it reshaped mindsets. She championed the idea that Filipino students can thrive on the global stage, equipping them with the competencies, confidence, and character needed to succeed internationally. Today, SISFU stands as a testament to that belief, producing graduates who are globally competitive and industry-ready.
Beyond institutional success, Dr. Ledesma-Laurel’s impact extends to nation-building. She has consistently advocated for accessible, quality education and has initiated programs that uplift communities and empower future generations. Her work reflects a deep commitment not just to academic excellence, but to social transformation. (Southville School)
In a video feature highlighting her vision and legacy, Dr. Ledesma-Laurel reaffirmed the importance of institutions like SISFU in shaping globally competent learners—underscoring her continued passion for advancing transnational education and innovation in learning.
As SISFU celebrates women who lead with purpose, we recognize Dr. Genevieve Ledesma-Laurel as a true pioneer—an empowered woman who broke barriers, challenged conventions, and built pathways for future generations.
Her legacy is not only seen in the institutions she founded, but in every student whose life has been transformed through education.
This International Women’s Month, we celebrate her vision, her courage, and her enduring impact on Philippine education.
